FILMS OF SIMON PEGG
Simon Pegg’s three most famous films to date are Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Run Fat Boy Run. These three films were made with his partners Nick Frost and Edgar Wright. The three of them are like the ultimate geek squad. All three of these films have a lot in common. Each one of them is a parody of a specific kind of movie. Shaun of the Dead is a zombie movie; Hot Fuzz is an action film and Run Fat Boy Run is a romantic comedy. All the films are well made but with a twist, the lead character is Simon Pegg, a funny, every day, slacker type character instead of the typical Hollywood leading man which makes the films funny and entertaining. Although the films are well made they have a home made feel to them. Like some friends got together and made a movie. The movies are not slick like your typical Hollywood films. They are more real and down to earth which makes them easy to relate to as a viewer.
In Shaun of the Dead the lead character is similar to the character in Run Fat Boy Run. A geek who is bored with life, has a boring relationship with his girlfriend, no ambition, no drive, lives in a low income apartment and dresses badly.
In Hot Fuzz the lead character is not as much of a geek. He is an over achieving cop who is so good his boss sends him to a small town because he is showing up his co-workers. Once in the small town, a murder is committed and the fun begins. All of these films are based on physical comedy. There is a lot of funny falls, fights, chases, falling downstairs, getting hit with things, etc.
In Run Fat Boy Run, we see the same character only this time it is a romantic comedy and he is trying to win back his girlfriend after having left her at the alter, pregnant. I enjoyed this movie. I laughed a lot and thought the humor was great. It is the kind of comedy I like. A lot of guy humor. Jokes about farting and blisters that break open in your face. I could relate to it because it was a romantic comedy told from the guy’s point of view.
The timing on all of these films is fast paced. The editing uses a lot of quick jump shots to keep the films exciting and entertaining. In Run Fat Boy Run the movie is about speed and running so using fast editing helps build excitement. All these films are also comedies so it is good to keep the pace fast moving.
The sets and atmosphere on all three films is similar. They all take place in England. In Shaun of the Dead and Run Fat Boy Run the main character is not rich, is an average looking, average working guy who lives in an average apartment with cheap furniture, wears nerdy clothes, and is a down on his luck. A real anti-hero.
All these films are off the beaten track and not mainstream because they have a sort of home made look about them. And the main character is the complete opposite of a typical Hollywood leading man. He is a slob and an out of shape geek for one thing. These films also parody mainstream Hollywood films.
As far as graphic design and what role it plays in these films. In Run Fat Boy Run the use of the brick wall is a design element which adds something unique and adds to the fun of the film. It is not the first time I have seen animation mixed with film but I thought the use of the brick wall was effective and fun.
When looking on line at some of the advertising around the film, both Hot Fuzz and Run Fat Boy Run have interactive video games you can play. Hot Fuzz has the two main characters dressed as police with large guns and they shoot at the screen. Then you enter the site and shoot different characters in a bar. In Run Fat Boy Run, there is a fake Ad for “National Erectile Dysfunction Awareness.” It asks the questions, “Are you having a hard time keeping up with your mate? Does your love life need a lift? Are you scared stiff that your love life is a little limp? The fake Ad has Simon Pegg wearing a NEDA t-shirt and a big banana. There are different tabs named: About ED; Symptoms of ED; and Treatment of ED. There is also an interactive video game with the faces of all the characters. This is a smart way to let viewers know what the story is about.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed these films and can say that I am a fan of Simon Pegg. I used to really like the Benny Hill show when I was young and these movies remind me of what I liked about Benny Hill, silly, physical, raunchy English comedy.
